As the nation’s focus increasingly turns to green jobs, a pressing need is to develop regional strategies that bring together employers, government and education in one strategic framework. Growth Sector, working with the mayors of Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Richmond helped develop a broad regional initiative—the East Bay Green Corridor – to create green career pathways for disadvantaged and disconnected youths and adults. Pathways incorporate a full spectrum of training extending from basic skills to entry level solar, energy audit and green construction, continuing through advanced training in energy efficiency and environmental controls. The initiative blends work and education so that participants at all levels can advance their careers. Living Cities identified the East Bay Green Corridor as one of the nation’s most advanced green energy partnerships.
Growth Sector Role: Growth Sector helped to develop an overall framework and strategy for the Corridor, and has helped raise more than $1 million to support initial programming. As the Corridor’s designated advisor, Growth Sector will continue to play a leading role in shaping programs, strategy and funding as the initiative expands.
Partners: The mayors of the four cities; the Alameda, Oakland and Richmond Workforce Investment Boards; the Peralta Community College system, California State University East Bay and the University of California
Funders: The City of Oakland and the State of California.

Considered a national model for urban green collar training, the Oakland Green Jobs Corps is one of the first initiatives designed to assist disadvantaged community residents to transition to green careers. The Oakland initiative provides college credited training in green construction, solar installation and energy audit, followed by paid on-the-job training and full-time employment. Participants also have the opportunity to continue their education to become HVAC technicians and engineers. In addition to receiving a certificate or diploma, students are eligible for full federal financial aid.
